I bought this drive to backup my iMac. It was only turned on when I was doing a backup untill March 08. Since then it has been doing Time Machine backups and is on all the time. The drive still mounts, but Time Machine can no longer write to it and I get a failure message every time it tries. I'm pretty disappointed. It was obviously functioning fine before, so the unit itself isnt defective. Hope to avoid buying another LaCie.

No problems with this drive at all. I reformatted it for NTFS, very easily -- and I'm not a tech geek, so if I can do it, anyone can. I'm buying a second one today, so I'll have two back-up drives, one to store off-site. You really can't beat this for the money. I've had it a year, and keep my whole folder of My doccuments backed up and safe, in case of a system failure.

Bought this through a Mac store package... I always assumed it had a fan since one always seemed to be humming (though the "fan" obviously did not work, since the HD was always very hot).

I used to keep all my multimedia files on here, and fortunately moved all my music back to my laptop a month ago. Today, just after our six-month anniversary together, I lost all my movie/video files, amoungst others. Never had much notice (besides the heating/humming that I had experienced since day 1), untill I heard loud clicking when I turned the drive on this afternoon.

I do not recomend this drive. The price is not right, unless you enjoy paying to for the time and effort to re-back up a couple hundred gigs of data onto an additional HD that you will eventually have to buy again.

I have 2 of these hard drives, both backed up and synced using Adobe Lightroom. I turn them on in the morning and I turn them off at night. No worries, problems or frustrations at all.

I have 2 other LaCie hard drives and they both work flawlessly.

I had the latest & greatest Western Digital junk avaliable. It was almost impossable to retreive anything stored.

My brother-in-law introduced me to the LaCie. It is extremly simple to use and I have experienced no problems.

P.S. I smashed the W.D. unit and put it in the garbage can.
