I just had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Simmons in November, 2008 at a conference. I purchased his book and he was kind enough to autograph it for me. usualy I get books and throw them on the shelf; however, this time I actualy started reading this book on the plane coming home. I couldn't put it down. I don't usualy write book reviews for people, but felt compelled to write one for this book. If you want to change your life, if you want to jumpstart your vision, if you want to apply life's lessons that you've heard before but for some reason it didnt sink in.......I strongly suggest you purchase "Do You!" It has inspired me more than I fully relized. Russell Simmons said many things that I've heard before but never fully grasped. I finaly "get it" and I'm definately going to "do me!" Thanks Russell! Overall I enjoyed reading Mr. Russell's book.
The things I agree with him on are stop procrastinating, work hard, focus, and age is just a number. :)

I am skeptical about vegeterianism being healthier lifestyle choice. I think most health problems are caused by other factors except just eating meat. For example whether one is a vegeterian or omnivore if one is eating more calories then one burns one will gain weight. Also, the issue is not just one of eating meat, but how our food is produced. I do agree though one can never go wrong with eating plenty of veggies and fruits. :)

Also, the religion issue he brings up in the book. As athiest/rationalist some of the stuff he talks about sounds too new agey to me, but that is just my oppinion. If Mr. Russel is simpley talking about god being a metaphore about finding ones inner strenght in overcoming obstacals then I have no problems with that. :)

There are hundreds of books trying to sell a success formula out there, what makes this one stand out?

Intrigued by the background of the author, I picked up the book expecting, if anything, a diffrent perspective on what it takes to climb the ladder of success. But going through the chapters, I was pleasantly suprised to find all the familiar consepts we've heard of in the past, albiet with diffrent and very hands on examples from Russell Simmons' life and upbrininging.

The book is written in a conversational and easy to read tone, there are a few repeating and prolonged passages on religion, yoga, and vegeterianism that may not agree with everyone, but an enjoyable read nonetheless. A small warning: watch out for the language in a few places.

...and then got preachy, irrelevent and boring. Going on about how bad African inmigrants are treated in France. Yes, we know how much better they were treated in the old country. Going on about "reparations." So write a check.

  Editorial Review
Since rising out of the New York City streets over twenty-five years ago, Russell Simmons has helped create such groundbreaking ventures as Def Jam Records, Phat Farm, and Def Comedy Jam. Russell might have helped introduce hip-hop to the world, but he credits his success to his belief in a strong set of principles?or laws. In twelve straightforward steps, Russell reveals a path that can be followed by anyone struggling to realize their dreams.

Russell?s laws stem from the belief that it?s impossible to receive any sort of lasting success from the world without giving something of lasting value to the world first. Blending business insight, universal spiritual truths, and an inspired sense of purpose, Do You! crosses the lines of age, race, and background, with wisdom that will lift you up and motivate you to pursue your vision.
