2008-12-25First of all... not for children. Very violent, and some nudity.
A great addition to my anime collection. It has one of the most riveting opening scenes I've seen in anime. Story and art are both good. I hope there will be a continuation of the series later.
recomended for fans of Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D, etc.
2008-12-214/5 is a suitable score for Elfen Lied. In its ambition alone it surpasses any generic anime, but there are a lot of technical and thematic shortcomings which prevent it from getting the top score that might be enjoyed by similiarily tragic specimans like Evangelion or Serial Experiments Lain. There are issues with pacing - advancing the plot depends on an excessive number of sketchy Deus ex Machinas (even for a fantasy) - and excecution can be poor: a crippled soldier, for instance, plots his revenge on the female protaganist throughout the series, but the director skips their big showdown and cuts straight to the end. For its strong points, many of these failures are forgivable, but the problems are too prevelant in too short a series for them to be dismissed entirely.
Cons aside, one of the strenghts of Elfen Lied is its style - it looks and sounds good. Some people claim the score is too much of the same, but my counter to them is that for a series of its length the low variation in music is appropiate - the haunting melodies perform their function excelllently. Just as importantly, the scenery always matches the mood demanded by whatever theme is prevailing at the moment, character and set designs show a high degree of sophistication, and coloring is lush. That the series is asthetically pleasing is perhpas its most durable virtue.
Some errors aside, characterization is moving and believable - the abruptness of many key events doesnt relate to the development of the character's psyches. Major shifts in their thinking are (normally) alluded to before they are fully expounded upon and are addressed naturaly as the story progresses. Overall what the charachters are feeling in relation to events makes more sense than the manner in which events unfold. One of the exceptions is the arch-villian, who goes from condemning the dangerous mutants to championing them as the future of the world. In-and-of-itself there is no problem with that, except the change in his thinking (or rather, saying) happens without any alusion - quite suddenly he just desides to start speaking his mind, there was no foreshaddowing that this was actualy how he felt. That's how also how it happened in the manga; I thought it was stupid there and I think it is stupid in the anime as well. Stupider, in fact, because the director had the chance to adjust this clumsiness, but elected not to. But for other key points, especially the female protaganist's relationship to the male protaganist, character development is natural. It is worth noting the weakest instances of characterization are those which are simultanously sketchy plot developments.
ironicly, what bothers most criticists, the abundance of nakedness and bloodshed, bothers me the least. accross societies, clothes are almost universally held as a sign of human dignity - finer garments mark a higher station than coarser garments, and no clothing is deemed befitting only of beasts and slaves. That the Diclinous are naked while in captivity and easily lose their clothing durring battle signifies the inhumanity people interpet them to posess. As evidence of this, it is worth noting that they are the only charachters who lose or go without clothing in any frequency. The goriness of their killings serves the same purpose, but in a diffrent sense - it's not about their social status so much as their status in nature - they are hunters with overwelming power and humans are their comparitively defenseless prey. So that there is a great deal of nakedness and bloodshed does not detract from the series.
Another thing which bothers some people but releives me is the ending - people complain it is too ambiguous, but I feel it concludes the story with a deft movement which leaves room for optomism (which I like in a tragedy). I've heard it said the manga ending is better, which is mind boggling since the manga's conclusion went through inappropiate pulpiness to a needlessly tragic end, and the `twins event' certainly wasnt less ambiguous. I'd say the Elfen Lied anime belongs on the shelf of dedicated collectors, but that people should steer clear of the manga.
2008-12-11This series as everyone else says is definatly not for children. The gore, and nudity is an almost constatn thing, but for what it is worth this series is Amazing!
The only thing I didnt like about this anime series: it ended. The charachters develop very well, there is no fluff in the sense of 3 episodes of she remembered this and he remembered that, everything has a purpose. The music is just as amazing as everything else, you will think about it for days after watching it. If you like music in any sense it is great, it fits the story theme and is a very good intro to the series in general. This set is just simpley amazing. If you have a love for anime, as I do, it is well worth your time and effort.
2008-12-04If you're someone who doesnt need special features and stuff like that, this is the collection for you. This box set has all of the episodes up to 13. It doesnt have the special episode though, I think they're called OVAs or something. The first disc has previews but other than that there is no other special features, which I actualy like because the price reflects that and since I never watch the special features, I'm not paying extra money for something I won't watch.
The picture is clear, the japanese audio, although in stereo, sounds great. I don't know about the english audio because I don't like the dub in this show. This box set takes up very little shelf space, it is a tad bit smaller than 2 regular dvd cases. The box it comes in is very sturdy, you don't really need to worry about it getting damaged. I'm not gonna talk about the show itself since there are already many reviews that talk about it in full detail. All I'll say is that if you've watched the first episode and were turned away from the show, try watching at least a couple more episodes. The story is actualy very good.
2008-11-02ok if you like blood gore/ romance type anime this is perfect this series is deffinalty in my top 2. great story plot, alot of violence WHAT more could you ask for? i HIGHLY recomend this anime to any anime fans
