Has anyone bought the new (October 2008) DVD release of this classic movie? Does it still contain the five minutes of uninteruptable commericals like previvous editions had? Thank you.

Everyone raves about Belushi's work here and rightly so but people tend to forget about the great work of the rest of the cast who went on to even greater comedic and dramtic heights such as Stephen Furst who is briliant here as Flounder who went on to become Vir on the excelllent "Babylon 5" series as well as Kevin Bacon (Footloose etc), Karen Allen (Indiana Jones etc), Tom Hulce (Amadeus)and the rest which is what makes this a rare example of a comedy that retains a lot of its ability to make us laugh over the years and hence age well.

If you like your comedies in the "Police acadamy" and its many sequels ilk then this one will amuse you no end and ranks amoung the best ever of the National Lampoon franchise. The Special Feature mockumentary "Where Are They Now?..." is amusing as well although not quite as good as the main course humour-wise and "The Yearbook: An Animal House Reunion" is also a very nice touch. The dvd itself is decent although I regret now getting the Full Screen version which does seem to omit a lot of the orginal film and the picture quality although not the best I've seen is mostly free from the usual imperfections such as white spots etc and the sound quality has been given the 5.1 suround sound treatment although this hasnt improved the quality that much.

Overall though this is an acceptible dvd version of a funny comedy that ages well although you may want to wait for a better restored and remastered picture and sound quality version in anamorphic widescreen format perhpas in a Director's Cut if John Landis ever gets the time to do such a project to surface in either the standard or preferrably the Blu-ray format.

but in this case, I defer to Andrew who wrote exactly what I thought, so that saves me some time. Oh, you have to sort "most recent first" or you wont know what I'm on about.

So what if you have to sit through a few ads? Go and spend the time shaping a sheet into an adhoc toga, stocking up on beer and ensuring your wife doesnt have a film ruining list of "jobs" for you to do.

Belushi is a colossus, his performence is Brando-esque and the clip where he gives his motivational speech about "no-one gave up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbour.." I have seen as part of a lecture on Leadership at Officer Training School. The only flaw I would pick in this film is that unviersity just isnt that good, and as a result, generations of students have been disappointed. Also the lyrics to Louie Louie are still as mysterous as they ever were.

In sumary, if you had to pick 10 films to take down into the bomb shelter with you, Animal House would be essesital. Put it this way, turn up at my bomb shelter without it and you aint getting in!

Animal house is another one of National Lampoons greats. Classic comedy about frats and I beleive the first. Nothing really compares since then.

Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 10/28/2008 Run time: 109 minutes Rating: R

This is one of those movies that works for all the wrong reasons--disgusting, lowbrow, base humor that we are all far too sophisticated to find amusing. So, just don't tell anyone you still think it's a riot to watch John Belushi as the brutish Bluto slurp Jell-O or terrorize his less-aggressive fellow students. This crude parody of college life in the '60s spawned many imitations, but none could match the fresh-faced talent or bad taste of this huge box office success. (Remember all those toga parties in the '80s?) The first of the National Lampoon movies, this was originally released as National Lampoon's Animal House. Keep an eye out for a very young Kevin Bacon in his first credited screen appearance. --Rochelle O'Gorman
